Originating in Ancient China, traditional belief places the origin of acupuncture in around 2500 BCE, making it one of the oldest healing modalities in humankind. This ancient procedure is still popular among the old and the young as one of the most effective and natural ways to improve general well-being and relieve myofascial pain. Acupuncture was born out of the philosophy of yin and yang. An imbalance of yin and yang disrupts the qi (pronounced “chee”), the life force. The qi flows through 12 meridians (pathways) in the body, each associated with a certain organ or function. Disruptions in the flow of qi result in diseases and abnormal conditions. The goal is to stimulate the central nervous system and release chemicals into the brain, spinal cord, and muscles. These biochemical processes stimulate the body’s natural healing process.
Modern day acupuncture is the insertion of fine sterile needles with the thickness of about 0.20 mm in specific areas of the body to activate the flow of the life force energy, (qi) the blood, ease the nervous system and balance your hormones and lymph.
At Ocean Bay Wellness our registered acupuncturist, specializes in distal acupuncture techniques and cupping. These methods activate your inner healer and eases the pain without stimulating the inflamed or painful areas.
Acupuncture and cupping may benefit you as a natural way to heal. It also can help you with:
Our registered and certified acupuncturist Elnaz, will discuss with you before hand all of your concerns, to determine the type of acupuncture treatment that will help you the most. Not everyone will need acupuncture and cupping all the time. She will ask you many questions. These can range from sleeping patterns to digestive issues, urinary function, menstruation cycles, myofascial pain and stress all in the mix. While it may feel unrelated, acupuncturists ask these questions because many conditions can manifest from basic digestive functions or another seemingly unrelated system in the body. She may ask you about your symptoms, behaviours and lifestyle. She may also closely examine: The parts of your body that are painful. The shape, coating and colour of your tongue. The colour of your face all before beginning treatment. Elnaz will discuss if cupping, needles or both are required for your session. Needle insertion usually lasts 10-20 minutes. Relaxing meditative music will be played and you can relax during this time. An acupuncture session may take up to 30-60 minutes, although some appointments may be much shorter. A common treatment plan for a single complaint would typically involve one or two treatments a week. The number of treatments will depend on the condition being treated and its severity.
